The importance of research to combat Xylella fastidiosa

The final meeting of the XF-ACTORS project and the 3rd European Conference on Xylella fastidiosa was held last month, from 26 to 30 of April, virtually, in order to learn a little more about this pathology that affects, above all, to European olive groves, as well as other stone fruit trees such as the almond tree and the vineyard.

During the meetings, the importance of research to combat the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa was highlighted, a disease that, according to Claude Bragard, president of the Plant Health Panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), has had devastating effects on European agriculture since it was first identified in the EU in 2013.

Life Resilience, a project co-financed by the LIFE program of the European Union, whose main objective is the prevention of Xylella fastidiosa in high-density olive and almond farms; was part of the celebration of these meetings, which have served to share the progress made in certain areas, the identification of resistant crops and the development of control measures and treatments for the pathogen.
